One-Year Visual Effects & Animation - Next Intake Oct 2011

The Met Film School is London's leading provider of practical filmmaking courses, based in Ealing Studios.

Course Overview

One-Year Visual Effects & Animation is an intensive course integrating film with visual effects and animation production. By the end of the programme students will have developed a core set of technical and creative skills related to digital filmmaking.

This is a creative course and you will combine the visual effects and animation skills you acquire with a fundamental knowledge of filmmaking and cinematography. By studying within a film school you will also have the opportunity to collaborate on other student films, putting your skills to practice in the safety of a learning environment.

For more information Request A Prospectus and our enrolments team will get in touch to talk you through the course.

The Visual Effects component of the course is taught using industry standard 3d and 2d compositing software. By the end of the year, students will be able to shoot their own HD footage and successfully integrate CG elements using a combination of Maya, Boujou and Nuke.

In the Animation component of the course, students will develop the acting and storytelling skills in order to tell short stories successfully. By the end of the year, students will have developed the technical skills required to create and animate their own 3D characters using a combination of Maya, Mudbox and Photoshop

Our One-Year Visual Effects & Animation course constitutes the first year of our BA (Hons) Film, Visual Effects & Animation degree. Students moving into the degree can choose to further specialise in areas of production including cinematography and visual effects and animation.

Entry Level Visual Effects Animation Jobs

Our One-Year Visual Effects & Animation course offers practical, hands-on training and will equip you with the knowledge to take on a variety of roles in the industry, including those outlined below:

Layout & Previz Artists
Layout artists are responsible for staging every shot and pre-visualising the action that will take place in every scene. Whereas a traditional storyboard artist creates a 2D representation of the individual shots within a production, a Previz artist creates a 3D representation of a storyboard including both spatial information and camera motion. In that sense the role of a layout artist in a CG production is similar to that of a cameraperson in a live action production.

3D Modeler (Junior)
3D modellers build all the 3D models for a CGI project from reference. A background in life drawing, architecture or sculpture will help a 3D modeller to specialize in areas such as characters, objects, environments and visual effects. Additionally it is important for a modeler to have a good appreciation of the overall production process, as requirements further down the pipeline will influence the design of the objects that they need to produce.

Texture Artist
A texture artist is required to create all the textures for all of the models, object sand environments within the production. Ideally a texture artist will also have skills as a 3D modeller and vice versa. But the larger the production the more likely modelling and texturing processes are treated as separate jobs within the production pipeline.

Roto Prep Artist
A roto prep artist prepares 2D digital or digitized film plates for compositing. Typical tasks range from wire and rig removal, in addition to rotoscoping and keying out alpha channels using match-move techniques wherever possible. The role of a roto prep artist is a very common entry level role within a large VFX production facility and leads most directly to a role as a digital compositor.

3D Tracker
The 3D Tracker or Camera Tracker is responsible for extracting the camera and /or object motion from a live action plate to be used in a 3D environment. The tracking process is one of the first steps in the 3D production pipeline and therefore, in some respects is similar to the role of the Roto Prep Artist within the 2D compositing pipeline. Additionally from time to time the a 3D tracking artist may be required to be on-set taking measurements and recording camera settings in order to extract the camera motion.

Render Wrangler
The role of the render wrangler is to keep the render farm running at maximum capacity, monitor, manage and check rendered shots and verify the delivery of completed shots. Often the render wrangler works the ‘graveyard’ shift and is therefore expected to be able to work independently. Superior organizational skills and some basic IT and system administration skills are necessary to succeed in this role.
