Digital Feature Film Production

 

Working collectively with your class, you will create a feature film. You will be involved in every step of the production from writing and development, casting and pre-production, working on the film’s shoot and providing creative input into post-production.

Working with Genre

 

This module will give you an overview of film genre which will enhance your sensitivity to areas that create meaning in film. The module offers particular study of two genres – comedy and thriller and you will explore and apply the directing conversions of each.

Craft Skills 2 – Advanced Camera and Lighting and Post-production


During this module you will discover how to compose a frame to represent the details in a screenplay, learn the implications of camera placement and understand the importance of maintaining visual lines with both a static and moving camera. You will also be given the opportunity to learn the basics of colour grading and visual effects software and the fundamentals of good sound design using Pro Tools software.

 Analysing Film, Broadcast and New Media

 

This module gives you the opportunity to investigate narrative and scriptwriting theories and the varying approaches to the analysis of film, television and new media content. You will gain an understanding of the construction of narrative and what constitutes storytelling – all skills that are vital for writing in every area of media production.

Movements in Film

 

Movements in Film will give you a theoretical understanding of film that will help you identity groups of films that have emerged from historical, political or aesthetic movements. The module will take the format of weekly screenings, lectures, seminars and readings.

Planning, Production and Project Management

 

This module gives you theoretical and practical experience of the methods used in planning for the creation of moving images. You will focus on budgeting, scheduling and other elements of project management in the moving image and media production industries.

Graduation Project

 

Your graduation project will help you develop the ability to work independently with advanced research skills. You will use your critical understanding of genre and technique and exercise your technical and aesthetic skills to a professional standard. This project will increase your understanding of current market and the means of exhibition and distribution available to you, whilst creating a product suitable for your showreel.

Directing Fiction and Drama

 

This module is designed to improve your fiction directing skills for any screen. You will develop your own individual directing style by exploring the creative preparation process. This includes script analysis, casting and rehearsal, working with actors on set, understanding visual storytelling and storyboarding and the importance of editing.
 

Experimental Film

 

This module is a hands-on examination of the possibilities of the moving image. Focusing on ‘breaking-the-rules’ filmmaking, you will produce your own project that will be a response to what you have learned about avant-garde filmmaking, video and installation art and interactive television.
 

TV Studio Production


This module introduces you to multi-camera filming, lighting, sound and vision-mixing concepts for live and as-live productions. You will gain experience of studio floor roles (including studio cameraman, sound recording and engineering, floor manager) along with an understanding of the function and workings of a studio gallery.

 

These technical skills will be taught using practical examples of TV genres including news and magazine programmes, quiz, reality and entertainment shows and TV multi-camera comedy and drama.
 

Cinematography Visual Storytelling



The aim of this module is to give you a thorough understanding of how to frame an image and how your decisions affect an audiences reading of a shot or scene. You will discover how to ensure the script is clearly conveyed whilst learning the possibilities of camera placement in order to maximise the narrative flow.

You will gain an insight into the current industry thinking on composition and camera movement and understand the relationship between framing and subject during the pre-production process and on set.

Animation, Compositing and Motion Graphics


This module will equip you with a fundamental understanding of live-action compositing and help you develop related skills in motion graphics and 2D animation. You will apply your film production skills by lighting and shooting your own green-screen footage.

 

Additionally you will practise your new understanding by working with elements provided by our industry partners.
