- Identify a good concept or idea

- Understand what producers are looking for and be able to create original, engaging characters

 
- Have developed the right structural approach

- Understand the stages of development in the life of a screenplay, including log-lines, synopses, treatments, outlines and drafts

- Understand the differences between a screenplay and the finished film


- Understand the role of genre in helping shape and market your story

- Understand the role of screenwriters within the film industry
