"A profoundly moving adaptation of Monica Ali's novel. An impressive debut." Nick Funnell TIME OUT
"A gently moving tale. A loving and frequently moving portrait of a family. Gavron proves herself a talent to watch." EVENING STANDARD
"Sensitive and intelligent" **** EMPIRE
"As memorable as a stroll down the real Brick Lane, this soulful adaptation of Monica Ali's heartbreaking novel rarely puts a step wrong. A truly heartfelt experience" **** James Mottram, MARIE CLAIRE
"Directed by Sarah Gavron, the movie is a jewel in its own right. The performance of Tannishtha Chatterjee as Nazneen is particularly luminous." SPECTATOR
Synopsis:
"At the tender age of seventeen, Nazneen's life is turned upside down. After an arranged marriage to an older man, she exchanges her Bangladeshi village home for a block of flats in London's East End. In this new world, pining for her home and her sister, she struggles to make sense of her existence and to do her duty to her husband. A man of inflated ideas (and stomach), he sorely tests her compliance.
But Nazneen submits, as she must, to Fate and devotes her life to raising her family and slapping down her demons of discontent. Until the day that Karim, a hot-headed local man, bursts into her life.
Against a background of escalating racial tension, they embark on an affair that finally forces Nazneen to take control of her life. Set in multicultural Britain, Brick Lane is a truly contemporary story of love, cultural difference, and ultimately, the strength of the human spirit."
Previous Met/APT Development Workshops
On 5th March 2007 we held a Casting Workshop. Oscar nominee director Paul Morrison (Solomon & Gaenor, Wondrous Oblvion), producer Judy Counihan (Antonia's Line, No Man's Land) and casting director Toby Whale (The History Boys, East is East), each from their unique perspective, held a conversation on the creative tensions in the decision making process both in development and after greenlight. Once again, the event was very well received and enjoyed by all who attended.
"When I first read the ad for the casting workshop I thought it sounded too good to be true but I went anyway and it was all true and as good as it seemed!
Experienced professionals talking openly about their work and experiences in an informal and relaxed setting where everyone was able to ask all (or at least some!) of their unanswered questions...and all for £3(including drinks and snacks!)
A great initiative by Metropolitan Film School's director Jonny Persey and a very rare opportunity in the industry... one not to be missed." Géraldine Cottalorda, actress.
On 5th February 2007 we held a Short Film Showcase, featuring three of this year's BAFTA nominees; Care (dir Corinna Faith, prod Rachel Bailey and Tracy Bass with APT Films), Cubs (dir Tom Harper, prod Lisa Williams), Kissing, Tickling and Being Bored (dir Jim McRoberts, prod David Smith) AND Vagabond Shoes (Jackie Oudney) and Dreamer (dir/prod Ella Melbourne).
Most of the directors of the shorts were on hand to discuss their films and answer questions. The event was another great success, and below you can read some of the feedback from students that attended...
" Very helpful for anyone looking to shoot a film. Especially Q & A session afterwards was useful."
" Absolutely superb great films, and a post-film discussion that has inspired. Will definitely be attending future events. Thank you!"
"Very well presented and helpful. Informal but well organised and informative."
(Part-Time Producing) produced theatre at university and wanted to move into film/TV after graduation. She took our course to learn more about the industry. "I had my heart set on being a producer but this course opened my eyes to alternatives, like marketing." Through the knowledge gained on our producing course Laura gained a role in marketing for Universal Pictures!
