Student Profile: Vanessa Gibbes - BA Film

Vanessa started our Two-Year Intensive Degree in Filmmaking in September 2007...

Did you always want to work in the film industry?

Not specifically, however, I have always been very passionate about the performing arts, especially singing and acting. I was looking for a professional outlet and felt filmmaking was an exciting industry which would incorporate all of my passions in a creative way.

How did you find out about the Met Film School and what made you want to study here?

I was looking for a film school that would offer a highly practical degree programme which would enable me to work in the industry upon graduation. Finding no suitable film courses in my homeland of New Zealand, I investigated options in the UK via the internet. I shortlisted twenty schools and on further research selected the five schools that best suited the qualities I was looking for and arranged interviews with the course directors. I was highly impressed by the Met Film school and specifically the content of the BA programme they were offering. It was clear that much thought and planning had gone into the preparation of the course and the tutors were all experienced industry professionals. I was further impressed by the positive and productive atmosphere of the school, as well as the passion and enthusiasm of the School Director, Jonny Persey.

What attracted you to the BA Programme?

It is an intensive, full time degree programme which effectively combines three years of study into two. The course covers all the aspects of filmmaking including screenwriting, producing, directing and editing as well as offering a good balance between practical and theoretical study.

What have been the highlights of the course so far?

The biggest highlight to date has been to produce, write, direct and edit my first short film. This combined everything we had learnt in the previous months in an intensive practical exercise. It pushed and challenged me in so many ways but as a result I learnt a multitude of new skills.

What advice would you give to prospective students?

This is a fantastic course which teaches all aspects of filmmaking in an encouraging environment. With such an extensive programme comes the challenge of plenty of assignments and hard work. If you are willing to give your best to the programme you will reap wonderful rewards.

Armen Antranikian

(One-Year Practical Filmmaking) has just received a Jury commendation in the international Filminute competition for his film One Minute Guide To The Planet Earth. One of the jury commented "How refreshing to find such a delightfully off-beat guide to a place we could all use a bit more perspective on!". Armen has just completed his next short, which he shot earlier this summer in Brazil.
