On 4th July 2007 the Met held its first event for film societies from across the UK here at Ealing Studios and it proved a great success. The event took the form of a day of digital cinema workshops, which included a seminar by development producer Uzma Hasan (Sugarhouse; French Film) on development, production and distribution in the digital age and a digital camera workshop by renowned Director of Photography Paul Wheeler BSC (The Merchant Of Venice; The Optician).
Over 35 film enthusiasts and student filmmakers from all corners of the UK took part in the event which gave them a chance to not only participate in an exclusive day of workshops led by industry professionals but also to meet and work with a fellow filmmakers in a non-competitive environment. The evening drinks and screening session allowed the societies to watch a number each others short films and discuss their own societies and their upcoming projects.
Toby Fell-Holden, an Oxford student who attended the day, comments “This workshop was an ideal opportunity to learn about the industry and crucial aspects to the film-making process. The day provided valuable insight into innovative developments in British independent film-making through production companies such as Slingshot and meeting the engaging tutors from the School improved my understanding of the craft. I would recommend it to any student seeking to expand their contacts and knowledge of the film world.”
Following the success of this first event, we are hoping to hold many more in the future, so watch this space for news of further film society events at the Met…
(One-Year Practical Filmmaking) short film Pulse has won two awards for Best Foreign Film and Outstanding Screenplay at the Dixie Film Festival in Atlanta. The film has also been selected as the only UK student short to be screened in Official Selection at the European Independent Film Festival in Paris. Pulse was the first film Emma made on her course at the Met. 'Pulse' is a fantasy romance with darkly comic elements which sees a man become addicted to giving himself electric shocks when he discovers they provide a means of contact with his dead wife. Congratulations to Emma!
